IN MEMORY OF SHANDEE BLACKBURN

This is your personal invitation to an event of our Safety
Campaign held in conjunction with Sergeant Nigel
Dalton and Senior Constable Stephen Smith - Mackay
district crime prevention unit.
As most of you will be aware, an inquest was recently
conducted into the death of my youngest daughter
Shandee. That process has highlighted to me the
importance of being proactive. As a mother, my mind
will forever rewind over and over the what
if's...obviously if I had known the danger that night, I
would have stopped at nothing to ensure Shandee made
it home safe. And anything I do now is totally
reactive...and too late to change what happened to
Shandee that night.
During this campaign the police and I hope to highlight
the many opportunities to be proactive rather than
reactive. We can never assume we are safe, whether
that be travelling to and from work, or at home or out
socialising. A lot of these crimes are committed by
opportunistic perpetrators and can be prevented. We
hope that by reducing the opportunities for these
crimes, we will reduce the incidences of them. We can
do this ourselves and help keep people safe while
making our community a safer place.
Yours sincerely
Vicki Blackburn
