Are Mackay and Whitsunday ratepayers going to have to meet the short-fall in federal government disaster relief funding?
Collectively, the local government authorities in our region have appled for $220 million of Category D funding under the National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) program where the state and federal governments each contribute 50%.
I spoke to Member For Dawson, George Christensen this morning (press play) - and he is "ropeable!" - because his government has announced they will contribute just $29.3 million and expect the state to also contribute $29.3 for a total of $58.6 million.
As soon as possible, George and Mayors Greg Williamson (Mackay) and Andrew Willcox (Whitsunday) will be going to Canberra to address the issues around areas like Shute Harbour - which has been given absolutely no funding.
They'll take with them the knowledge that it appears the Qld State Government will contribute their full requested amount of $110 million - making the federal government look ridiculous as they try to hold onto their 1 seat majority government.
If nothing is achieved, ratepayers will be slugged - and George Christensen will be taking very striong action, perhaps on the floor of parliament
