A man has been charged after a woman was shot dead outside her South Mackay home in front of her teenage daughter.

Police say the 34-year-old woman pulled up at the Robb Place address when the 31-year-old man approached the car and shot her.

The victim’s teenage daughter and a friend were also in the vehicle at the time.

Superintendent Graeme Paine said the two young passengers managed to flee to a nearby home.

“It’s an absolutely shocking thing to have experienced,” he said.

“They were obviously very fearful … it’s an absolutely tragic situation.”

The gunman also allegedly shot a 66-year-old man in the chest as he came to help.

Paramedics took the 66-year-old man to hospital in a serious but stable condition, while police declared an emergency situation.

A suspect car was later identified at Paget and the 31-year-old man was taken into custody and is assisting police.

Superintendent Graeme Paine said the man’s motive is unknown.

“There is nothing in our investigations to indicate that the parties are known to each other at this stage, however we do believe they reside in fairly close proximity,” Superintendent Paine said.

The 31-year-old has now been charged with murder and attempted murder and is due to appear before the Mackay Magistrates Court today.
