Calls For Review Of Child Rape Case
A local MP is calling on the Attorney General to hold a review into a sexual assault case.
In 2017, the eight-year-old was assaulted in her home.
The man, who was sentenced to three years jail last week, will be eligible for parole in February.
Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert has spoken to relatives who have told her they want more to be done.
"I have written to the Attorney General on behalf of the family, requesting that there be a review of the case, the family is extremely upset, they believe that the sentence handed down is not adequate for the cause of harm to their child" she said.
Opposition Attorney General David Janetzki has agreed, saying the decision for a parole eligibility date in February needs to be appealed.
"If the law needs to be toughened up then it needs to be toughened up, we cannot have these most heinous offenders against our most precious children walking off with barely a slap on the wrist" he said.
Mr Janetzki said "What we need to do is to make sure the law values every human life, whether it be a most innocent child that's been raped or whether it's been a child that has lost its life, the law needs to do more to protect the vulnerable".
Mackay locals have lodged a petition to Queensland Parliament.
