A local organisation is calling on the community to do their bit for Clean Up Australia Day this weekend.

Whitsunday's Eco Barge Clean Seas, who is holding an event on in Airlie Beach on Sunday, is urging locals to volunteer their time to help protect the environment .

Eco Barge Clean Seas's Libby Edge says the day is vital in helping to protect local beaches.

"It's actually preventing marine debris going out to sea and harming our precious marine life," Ms Edge says.

Volunteers will meet at Mantra Club Croc at 8:30am to kick off the 3-hour clean-up.

Last year, the Eco Barge Clean Seas team and 116 passionate locals collected 800 kilograms of rubbish off the streets.

But Ms Edge says she is hoping for an even better turn out this year.

"Love to see all those happy friendly faces at 8:30am for the registration on Sunday," she says.

15 other events are being held across Mackay and the Whitsunday's - head to https://www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/ to find out more.
