How you can get a $200 voucher for a Whitsundays tour

Whitsunday tourism operators are hopeful $200 travel vouchers – which go live today – will help kick start the local economy amid the coronavirus downturn.

Locals and holidaymakers alike can snap up a $200 voucher to spend on a tourism experience, such as an adventure tour or sailing cruise, to be used from now until June 30.

The State Government has set aside $1.2 million – the equivalent of 6,000 vouchers - for the scheme, meaning people will need to get in quick to secure a voucher.

Tourism Whitsundays CEO Tash Wheeler says it is first in best dressed, as vouchers are only activated once a booking is made.

"We will continue to issue these vouchers until the funds are exhausted.

"If you have received a voucher, don't sit on it for a few weeks and try and think about when and where you might like to go, make a decision and activate that voucher as soon as you get it," Ms Wheeler says.

She expects to be swamped by demand from both locals and intrastate visitors.

"The inbox is running hot, the website is certainly getting lots of visitation and our phones are running hot as well.

"Overnight cruise sailing is an awesome example, particularly for that adventure market - people that really want to immerse themselves around the Whitsundays islands," she says.
