There is an appeal for help from the public after an attempted car theft at a West Mackay intersection.

A Mitsubishi Mirage was reported stolen after an alleged home break in at Andergrove on Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson for Queensland Police says a few hours later, the stolen car stopped at the intersection of Nebo Road and Webberley Street in West Mackay next to a Holden Calais.

One of three people in the stolen car reportedly got out and approached the passenger door of the vehicle beside it.

"An attempt was made to open the front passenger door of the Holden Calais, this was unsuccessful as the door was locked," the spokesperson says.

"The unknown person has then returned to the Mitsubishi which quickly drove from the area.

"The man who attempted to open the front passenger side door of the Holden Calais is described as wearing a red hoodie with the hood up, face concealed and wearing black gloves."

Police are encouraging anyone with information or who may have dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.
