A rescue operation is underway in Mackay, after a woman has fallen up to 20 metres down a cliff.

Emergency crews were called to the incident along a walking track off Albatross Street at Slade Point around 4pm on Friday.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson says a woman in her 20s was being treated for a potentially serious back injury, but was reportedly in a stable condition.

Around 5pm, Queensland Fire and Emergency workers were still on scene, working out best course of action to get down to the patient including setting up safety lines.
