Some Australian Facebook Users Are Eligible for a $50m Privacy Breach Payout

Meta has recently come under fire after breaching Australians’ privacy and are currently having to compensate $50,000,000 to some users. There are currently roughly 311,000 Australians’ on Facebook who can apply to get a part of the $50,000,000. If you are eligible you’re going to want to act fast as well as you only have until the 31st of December to make your claim.

It was revealed that an investigation by The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner discovered that Cambridge Analytica retrieved users personal information by using a personality quiz app called This Is Your Digital Life. Despite the fact only 53 Australian Facebook users used and installed the app, due to particular settings on the site, these 53 users exposed their friends list personal information too when the app requested them to also share their personal information from Facebook.

You’re eligible to apply for the payout on these conditions:

  • You must’ve been on Facebook between November 2nd, 2013 through too December 17th, 2015
  • Must have been in Australia for more than 30 days during that period of time
  • Must have either downloaded and installed the Life app or were friends on Facebook with someone who did install the app.
