A Mackay teenager has been charged with importing child abuse material into Queensland.
19-year-old Raymond Chen was stopped by Australian Border Force officers at Brisbane International Airport earlier on January 5 after flying in from Guangzhou, China with his parents and younger sibling.
During a baggage search, officers allegedly found videos on the teen’s mobile phone which contained child abuse material.
He was arrested and charged with the importation of child abuse material.
He is expected to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court today.
Superintendent Amanda Coppleman said ABF officers use intelligence-led targeting and are highly trained to detect this abhorrent material to protect the most vulnerable members of the Australian community.
“Child abuse material is not abstract or victimless. It exists because real children have been abused, and its circulation continues that harm,” SUPT Coppleman said.
“Stopping it at the border protects the Australian community from further harm.
“Anyone considering bringing child abuse material into Australia should understand that we are actively looking for it and we will take action when we find it.”
