A fire at the Bowen Landfill has sparked a reminder for locals to correctly dispose of used and unwanted batteries.
The cause of the incident was a suspected lithium-ion battery that was incorrectly placed in the scrap metal pile, resulting in a dangerous fire.
Lithium-ion batteries can be extremely hazardous if not handled or disposed of correctly, especially when punctured, crushed, or exposed to heat.
The Bowen Delta Rural Fire Brigade was able to respond quickly and the fire was brought under control before it could cause further damage.
Household batteries can be safely recycled via Whitsunday Regional Council’s Household Battery recycling Scheme by placing them in the collection units located in all Whitsunday Regional Council Customer Service Centres and Libraries.
Household Battery Recycling bins are also available at the Collinsville and Cannonvale Transfer Stations, as well as other community locations such as Bunnings.
For all other batteries, including lead-acid and lithium-ion, please present these to staff at your local transfer station or landfill for safe disposal.
