Whitsunday Coast Airport has doubled passenger and aircraft numbers in just 10 years, but the council says they’re outgrowing our infrastructure.
They’re seeking federal funding to upgrade the airport to keep up with the tourist load, and ensure the Whitsundays are connected to Queensland.
Whitsunday Regional Council are pushing for $8.25M & $22.6M in federal funding to deliver Stage 1 projects from the 2024 Master Plan – ensuring smooth passenger and aircraft movements for the future.
In 2019, the airport’s terminal expansion doubled it’s size in an effort to future proof the facility.
Last year, Mayor Ry Collins said the ‘sky is the limit” when it came to the Airport, which broke the 500,000 passenger milestone.
“The last terminal upgrade was completed in 2019 and was designed to cater for a decade of growth but such has been the rapid growth of passenger numbers the terminal has hit capacity in less than 5 years,” he said last year.
