Hammer-wielding man charged over three robberies

A 27-year-old man has been charged following three armed robberies in Mackay.

Around 10.30am Wednesday, police were called to reports of a man entering a tobacconist on Celeber Drive at Andergrove armed with a hammer.

The man allegedly demanded cash from an employee before running from the scene with a quantity of money.

Then around 7pm that same day, it’s alleged the man entered a Finch Street convenience store in Slade Point armed with a hammer and demanded a sum of money.

He fled in a white sedan towards Slade Point Road with a quantity of money.

A few hours later around 10pm, he’s accused of holding up an Empire Street service station in Paget armed with the hammer and demanded cash again.

It is alleged the man left the scene a short time later with a phone charger stolen from the premises.

The employees at all three businesses were not physically injured in the incidents.

Police intercepted a vehicle around 4am yesterday and took the man into custody.

The 27-year-old Greenmount man has been charged with three counts of armed robbery.

He is due to appear before Mackay Magistrates Court today.
