More rain is on the way for the region after some locations already copped more than 300mm of rain overnight.

A severe thunderstorm warning for the Mackay-Whitsunday region has now been cancelled, but an initial flood warning remains in place for the Pioneer River.

The region’s biggest totals since 9am yesterday include 322mm at O’Connell, 268mm at Stafford Crossing, 217 at Forbes Road, 213mm at Upper Finch Hatton Creek and 184mm at Calen.

Bureau of Meteorology Senior Meteorologist Dean Narramore said the wet weather is staying put for now.

“We’re likely to see these showers, rain and thunderstorm activity continue for much of today with widespread 50-100mm expected, while some areas expecting 150-200mm.”

“This wet weather will probably continue into Thursday and Friday before shifting further north into the weekend,” he said.

Minor flooding is occurring at Finch Hatton and Gargett, and along the Pioneer River at Mirani.

Kinchant Dam has also reached its maximum operating level and excess water being released into Sandy Creek, with locals urged to stay informed.

There are multiple road closures in place including the Bruce Highway at Kelsey Creek, Palm Tree Road at Homebush, Mackay Bucasia Road at Richmond and Marian Eton Road.

Senior Sergeant Shane Edwards from Mackay Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to drive to conditions, and if it’s flooded – forget it.

“Too many lives are put at risk when people try to drive through floodwaters, not only the driver and passengers, but the people who have to come rescue them,” Snr Sgt Edwards said.

Senior Sergeant Edwards also said it is important to ensure our vehicles are in good condition.

“If you’ve got bald tyres or tyres with scrubbed edges, then they can’t displace the water correctly and therefore they’ll be a lot more dangerous to drive on the roads.”

“Make sure wipers are in good condition, and if it’s rain put your headlights on,” Snr Sgt Edwards said.
