Mackay had Queensland’s 5th highest number of births last year.
New State Government data shows 1028 babies were registered in the 4740 postcode in 2023.
Records have also given insight into popular names.
Isla was the most frequent name for 285 newborn girls in 2023, while Oliver retained first place for names for boys (451) – for the 11th year in a row.
The combination of Oliver and Isla holding the top spots previously occurred in 2021, highlighting the ongoing popularity of both names with parents in the Sunshine State.
Queensland registered 58,959 births in 2023 – the third highest of Australian states and territories, and almost 3800 fewer than the previous year (62,740).
“Identifying 6,922 distinct first names for girls and 6,004 for boys born during 2023 really reflects the remarkable growing population and cultural diversity of Queensland,” says Attorney General Yvette D’Ath.
“It is particularly incredible that Oliver, a name common in medieval times, continues to see such popularity this many years in a row – and is the most frequently chosen name in general by a large margin.
“To put its dominance into perspective, Oliver has held the top spot since the Queensland Maroons won their famous eighth consecutive State of Origin series.
“Many of the top boy names have remained stable over the last decade, while there has been a slightly greater diversity in girl names across the same period.
“The entire top 10 names for boys from 2022 have made a reappearance in 2023, albeit in a slightly different order.
“Harper and Ivy have remained popular choices over the last few years, appearing again in the top 10, while Aaliyah has made a return to the top 100.”
