Are Nintendo and Universal Pictures may be preparing to bring “Donkey Kong” to the big screen?
The studios recently filed a copyright claim for an “Untitled Donkey Kong Project: Motion Picture,” submitted in May and recorded in June 2023. While no official announcement has been made, the filing hints at plans for a feature-length film centered on the iconic Nintendo character.
Details about the potential “Donkey Kong” movie remain scarce, with no information yet on casting or creative teams. It’s important to note that studios often register projects that never progress beyond the development phase, so this filing doesn’t necessarily confirm a release.
Fans are already speculating about the possible return of Seth Rogen, who voiced Donkey Kong in 2023’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” With a sequel to that film scheduled for next year, it’s possible the new movie could serve as a spin-off.
If the “Donkey Kong” film moves forward, it would mark the fourth major movie adaptation of Nintendo’s beloved franchises, following the two “Super Mario Bros.” films and the highly anticipated live-action “Legend of Zelda” movie, set for release in 2027.
Outside the “Pokemon” franchise, Donkey Kong, Mario, and Zelda are among Nintendo’s most beloved gaming properties, while other fan-favourites like “Animal Crossing,” “Super Smash Bros.,” and “Kirby” also remain strong contenders for future adaptations, I mean who wouldn’t rush out to the cinemas to see a Super Smash Bros. movie with all the cross-over characters in it?
In the coming day’s we’ll be seeing the launch of the new Donkey Kong Bananza video game for the Nintendo Switch 2 and we can’t wait to play that one. We could all do with some more Donkey Kong in our lives.
