Everyone is constantly talking about the rising cost of living, but most of us are casually throwing away thousands of dollars right into the kitchen bin.

According to End Food Waste Australia, the average household tosses out a staggering $2,500 worth of food every single year. When you think about it, that is a massive chunk of your hard-earned change. To put it in perspective, CEO Dr Steven Lapidge points out that saving $2,500 on your groceries is actually 16 times better than the government’s $150 power bill rebate.

Instead of waiting for politicians to promise financial relief during election season, the solution is already sitting in our kitchens. The Great Unwaste campaign is trying to change how we manage our meals, aiming to be just as effective as the famous Slip, Slop, Slap sun safety message.

Campaign Director Mandy Hall highlights a harsh reality: while 3.4 million households experience food insecurity, we are throwing away the equivalent of 7.7 million meals every day. It is a habit that costs us dearly and damages the environment.

Simple Changes, Huge Savings

The good news? Keeping that $2,500 in your pocket is entirely possible. It all comes down to planning your meals, cooking the right portions, and storing your produce properly so it actually gets eaten. By taking a few extra minutes to think about your grocery habits, you can stop feeding the bin and start padding your bank account instead.
