We Tested the MOVA N1 Window Cleaning Robot on the Toughest Glass in the House

The sun is shining, your morning coffee is perfectly brewed, and you sit down to look out at your garden, only to be confronted by a collection of fingerprints, dog nose smudges, and dried rain spots across your sliding glass doors. Suddenly, your relaxing morning is hijacked by the prospect of buckets and squeegees. It’s one of the jobs around the house I absolutely despise, and mainly because I’m just not good at it. No matter how hard I try, there are always streaks.

So that’s why the idea of a window cleaning robot is appealing. I feel like I’m saying this a lot lately the old “it’s a concept that sounds like it was pulled straight from a science fiction novel”, but that is the reality of where we are at today, robots that are doing household chores like washing floors, mowing lawns and now windows.

Specifically I’ve been looking at the MOVA N1 Window Cleaning Robot, a smart device the size of a dinner plate that aims to replace a good old-fashioned scrub. I put it to the test across standard panes, large sliding doors, and the ultimate household challenge: a borderless glass pool fence.

The Story Behind the Tech: Why Does It Exist?

The simple answer, nobody truly enjoys cleaning windows.

The MOVA N1 Window Cleaning Robot exists to solve this exact frustration. Manufactured by MOVA, a brand focused on accessible smart home ecosystems, this device was created to make glass maintenance less of a chore and more of a spectator sport. It is targeted at anyone who wants to reclaim their weekend, from busy professionals working long hours to parents who are tired of wiping away handprints every second day.

Priced around $448 AUD (often discounted from $549 AUD at major retailers), it sits in a very interesting middle ground. It is affordable enough to tempt curious buyers who are tired of cleaning, yet packed with enough sophisticated technology to suggest it is much more than just a novelty item.

Mechanics and Features

Before we talk about how well it actually cleans, let us look at how it manages to stay on the glass in the first place without crashing to the floor, afterall, that is the true magic trick. The MOVA N1 weighs only 1.3 kilograms with an ultra-thin 59-millimetre profile. This slender design is brilliant because it allows the automated cleaner to squeeze behind tight spaces, like narrow safety grilles or layered sliding windows, where bulkier machines would instantly get stuck.

The robot secures itself to the glass using a powerful internal motor that generates 8,000Pa of suction. It feels incredibly secure once attached. You simply hold it flat against the window, press the start button, and listen as the motor whirs to life, grabbing hold of the surface with impressive force.

In terms of actual cleaning mechanics, the N1 utilises a 120-millilitre water tank, which MOVA claims is enough to cover up to 32 square metres of glass per fill. Rather than just dragging a damp cloth around, it uses a dual-wing misting system. This means it sprays a fine, micron-level mist of cleaning solution ahead of its path to loosen dirt and grime. Then the washable microfiber cloths (attached to the base) wipe the mist away in real time to deliver a streak-free finish.

Navigation is handled by intelligent path planning. The dynamic data processing algorithm allows the robot to proactively match a “Z” or “N” route for maximum coverage. It also uses obstacle detection to work its way around window frames and handles. You have three convenient ways to control it: a physical button on the unit (the easiest option), a remote control, or a smartphone app.

Safety is also a massive priority here. Hanging a moderately expensive piece of technology two stories up on a window requires a lot of trust. The MOVA N1 features 12 layers of safety protection, including a tethered safety rope and a built-in 30-minute backup battery. If the power to your house unexpectedly cuts out, the robot will not immediately plummet to the ground; it will stay attached and sound an alert, giving you plenty of time to rescue it. It’s not the type of device you set and go do your shopping so you would be fairly close to it anyway.

The Good, The Bad, and The Tangled

Specifications on paper are great, but how does this smart window cleaner actually perform in a modern home environment? I put the MOVA N1 to the test across a variety of glass surfaces to see how it handles daily life.

What It Does Well

On large, standard-framed windows and sliding glass doors, the MOVA N1 is genuinely impressive. The intelligent navigation maps out the edges of the frame perfectly, systematically working its way from top to bottom. The dual-wing misting system deposits just the right amount of liquid, and the microfiber pads do a fantastic job of buffing the glass to a sparkling finish.

It is strangely hypnotic to watch. There is a real sense of satisfaction in sitting nearby with beer in hand while a robot does the hard physical work for you. The slim profile meant it navigated pretty well with the overlapping sections of my sliding doors, and the low noise level meant I did not have to shout over it to hold a conversation, too be fair most of the conversation was with my wife where we were both wonder how the hell it stayed connected to the glass.

The microfiber pads are also incredibly easy to remove and wash, making ongoing maintenance simple and the cleaning solution refill is surprisingly affordable especially when comparing it to bottle of Windex these days.

The biggest challenge for the MOVA N1 was for frameless glass panels on a borderless pool fence.

Without a physical frame to bump into it was up to the edge sensors, and even though I sat there nervous of the outcome ready to catch the device if it lost suction. On the pool fence, I struggled more than the robot, I can’t say this will be true for all borderless panels, but it did a great job on mine.

Where It Struggles

There are a few quirks to be aware of. First, the unit lacks a low-water indicator. You have to visually keep an eye on the tank to ensure it has not run dry, which slightly diminishes the “set-and-forget” appeal. Second, the power cable and the safety tether have a tendency to tangle with each other if you are not careful when setting it up and putting it away.

It is also important to remember that this is not a fully autonomous robot like a floor vacuum that returns to a charging dock when it finishes a room. You still have to physically move the unit from one window pane to the next, plug it into the nearest socket, and regularly wash or swap out the microfiber pads. It is a tool to assist you, not a total replacement for human effort, but I’ll take that any day of the week over actually washing those windows myself.

How It Stacks Up: The Competition

The robotic window cleaner market is growing rapidly, with competitors like Ecovacs and Hobot offering very similar devices. So, how does the MOVA N1 compare to the rest of the pack?

When placed side-by-side with an entry-level competitor the MOVA N1 stands out, offering a larger 120-millilitre water tank, whereas the Winbot Neo Mini only features a 60-millilitre tank. This means you spend less time manually refilling the MOVA unit during a large weekend cleaning session.

The N1 also benefits from offering triple control options (button, remote, and app), giving you flexibility in how you command the unit. For its current price point, the MOVA N1 delivers a highly competitive and refined feature set.

Final Verdict

Did I enjoy my time with the MOVA N1 Window Cleaning Robot? Absolutely. I love outsourcing a tedious chore to technology, and when it is in its element, the N1 performs admirably.

It will fundamentally change the way you approach weekend cleaning. Instead of dreading the squeegee, you can attach the robot to your sliding doors, tap a button, and go read a book while it works, just be ready to swap windows when it’d done. The sleek design, strong suction, and effective misting system result in beautifully clean, framed windows.

If you have large, framed windows or standard sliding doors and want a lightweight, quiet, and affordable helper, the MOVA N1 is recommended. It does exactly what it promises and leaves your glass looking pristine. But if your main goal is cleaning a massive frameless pool fence, you might want to stick to the manual squeegee for just a little while longer.
