Boaties escape uninjured after boat sinks near Scawfell Island

Six people have been left unscathed after the vessel they were on started taking on water 35 kilometres north-east of Mackay.

The RACQ CQ Rescue crew was tasked to near Scawfell Island around 3pm Wednesday to reports of a rapidly sinking vessel.

When they arrived they found the six people had already evacuated and they were spotted on nearby rocks.

Radio contact with the boaties then confirmed all were safe and uninjured.

Their boat didn’t fare so well.

The chopper crew provided watch overhead until Volunteer Marine Rescue arrived on scene to retrieve the stranded boaties.
