Lifeguard shortage impacting Mackay facilities

Public pools across the region are gradually reopening in time for the warmer weather.

Memorial Swim Centre will open its gates on Monday.

But due to staff shortages, the facility will temporarily operate with reduced hours until more staff can be recruited and trained.

This means the facility will be open from 5.30am to 12.30pm on weekdays and 8am to 12.30pm on weekends.

Mackay Regional Council says all of its aquatic facilities are currently experiencing staffing shortages.

The Blue Water Lagoon’s reopening has been pushed back to September 17 after struggles to secure an operator.

Council is encouraging residents who are interested in a new, exciting and rewarding career to consider completing a lifeguard course.

Reef Training will be running lifeguard courses at the Mackay Aquatic and Recreation Complex on September 24-25 and October 15-16 from 9am to 4pm each day.
