Residents along an increasingly busy road fear it’s only a matter of time before another accident.

Locals from Gregory Cannon Valley Road have met with the Member for Whitsunday to push for an overall safety assessment of the stretch.

Parts of the road range from 80km/h to 100 km/h.

MP Amanda Camm says increased drive tourism and the growing population have caused more traffic.

“When we see trucks and a number of caravans being towed and an increase in those larger sized vehicles travelling at a higher speed and the volume, that’s caused some issues where residents have reported a number of near misses,” she says.

“As well as commuter traffic to access out to the Bruce Highway. While it is a state road it is a road that wasn’t built to the capacity and to the numbers it currently has.”

Ms Camm has written to Transport and Main Roads while temporary signs are in place for safety.

“Just an overall safety assessment of the road is what the residents have requested and certainly Whitsunday Regional Council were very responsive to that as well and we’ll wait to hear back from TMR,” she says.
